Introduction

My name is Adnan Rashid Chaudhry. I am presently doing my thesis at the Centre de Morphologie Mathematique (CMM) Ecole des Mines de Paris (ParisTech). My main area of interest is medical image processing. From more than two years, I have been working on retinal image processing under the supervision of Jean-Claude Klein[1] who is one of the worldwide recognized experts in image processing related to ophthalmology.

For more than 10 years, Jean-Claude Klein has been engaged in research related to the processing of eye fundus images. Two main ophthalmologic areas of research being conducting at the CMM are “Diabetic Retinopathy” and “Age-Related Macular Degeneration”. Previously, a thesis has been conducted at the CMM on the Diabetic Retinopathy. The objectives of that research were the automatic detection of anatomical elements (Vessels, Optic Disk, Macula) and lesions (microaneurisms, hemorrhages, exudates).

The project is an on going research. During the first eight months of my thesis, I have improved the algorithms and the software modules developed by Thomas Walter during his thesis on a computer-assisted system for diabetic retinopathy diagnosis.

Presently, I am working on my thesis titled as “Image processing Applications on Eye Fundus Autofluorescence images for Quantification and classification of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)”. The eye Fundus AutoFluorescence (FAF) is the latest image modality for the diagnosis of AMD. The image processing on FAF modality is much harder than on color fundus images for the development of automatic image processing tools. FAF images are monochromatic and show a low signal to noise ratio. In spite of these inconveniencies, I have successfully developed automatic tools for the detection of anatomical elements of retina, image registration techniques for multimodal retinal images, shading correction, image normalization and detection of AMD lesions. (Objectives of the Thesis)

During the course of my thesis, I have closely worked with experts in ophthalmology[2] for image databases development, description of medical objectives and evaluation of the methods, I have developed.

Note: My thesis will be defended by the end of September (2009).
