Restoration of motion picture soundtracks by digital image-processing
The RESONANCES project (REstauration du SON par ANalyse de séquenCES d'images) aims to restore the soundtrack directly at the image level before its conversion into an audio signal in contrast to most restoration techniques.
A restoration of the optical soundtrack performed directly at the image level image makes it possible to deal with every kind of degradation (such as a long vertical scratch or a lateral fungus) even if one do not know its equivalent in the acoustic level.
Variable area soundtracks are symmetrical with respect to a vertical axis, this property can be used to restore the damaged side of such soundtracks:

The digitizer
The digitizer used in the RESONANCES Project has a linear camera able to scan 48000 lines of 512 pixels with 12 bits gray level depth in 1 second:
