Surface analysis, modeling and optimization

Version Française

The performance of a combustion engine is tightly related to the friction force between the cylinder liner and the piston rings. It is believed that this friction can be significantly reduced by optimizing the surface topography of the cylinder. As first step towards this goal, in collaboration with Peugeot SA, Renault, JPX and ENSMM, analysis tools have been developed to study the topography currently used in commercial engines. This work was initially financed by the PREDIT research program, and is now being continued thanks to the help of the ADEME.

The work undertaken by Costin Caciu has led to the development of a numerical tribometer.
